Camping With Small Children - My Top 10 Tips

Camping With Small Children: Tips For An Unforgettable Family Adventure

Camping is a fantastic way to bond with your family and create lasting memories. But when you're camping with kids of different ages, it requires some extra planning to ensure everyone has a great time. Whether you have a 10-year-old, 8-year-old, or a 4-year-old (or a child somewhere in between) I have  tried to put together some of my top tips for a successful and enjoyable camping trip.

1. Choose the Right Camp Site

Selecting the right campground is crucial when camping with kids. Look for family-friendly campsites that offer amenities like clean toilettes and showers, drinkable water, and perhaps even a playground. As a family who love horses, we recently came back from a small holding with horse in the paddock next to the tents. One thing I always do is research nearby attractions or hiking trails suitable for all ages, so you have plenty of options to keep everyone entertained.

2. Involve Them in Planning

Before booking any campsite I always make sure that my kids feel involved and excited by letting them help with planning. I Show them pictures of the camp site, discuss activities that we could be doing, and let them write lists, choose some meals or snacks for the trip. This sense of being involved can boost their enthusiasm for the adventure.

3. Pack Together

Packing for a camping trip is a great opportunity to teach your kids about preparedness. I give each child a small backpack to pack their teddies, colouring books, pencils etc and  I also let them help me pack essentials like a change of clothes, pajamas etc. This responsibility not only lightens your load but also empowers your kids.

4. Consider Comfort

Comfort is key to an enjoyable camping experience for kids of all ages. Bring extra blankets and hot water bottles to ensure everyone sleeps well, especially because it gets colder in the night time. One thing I found great for me was an electric heat pad to instantly warm beds up, it really helped my 4 year old get to sleep pretty quickly.

This is the heat pad I purchased and worked wonders on our recent trip:

5. Entertainment and Activities

Plan a variety of activities to keep kids engaged. For the 10-year-old, consider nature scavenger hunts, beginner-friendly hikes, The 8-year-old might enjoy helping with campfire cooking, nature crafts, or stargazing. Keep the 4-year-old entertained with simple games, storytelling, and easy nature walks.

Games that we often taken include:

6. Safety First

Prioritize safety by setting clear boundaries and rules for the campsite. As soon as we get the campsite we teach our kids about the basics of outdoor safety, such as staying close by, not approaching wild animals, and the proper use of camping tools. Having a first aid kit handy is essential for any minor cuts or scrapes.

7. Food Adventures

Camping food can be a highlight of the trip. Involve your kids in cooking simple meals. Let them create their own toasted marshmallows and add chocolate, and other favorite toppings. Don't forget to pack a variety of snacks to keep their energy levels up. We generally find a local supermarket once we have set the tent up as this saves space in the car.

8. Embrace Nature

Use this opportunity to connect your kids with nature. Show them different types of plants and insects, listen to bird calls, and explore the surroundings together. Engaging with nature can spark curiosity and a deeper appreciation for the environment. On our last trip we went on evening walks and spotted frogs and newts, not that I was most excited but all 3 children where over the moon.

9. Flexibility is Key

While planning is important, be prepared to adapt. Kids can be unpredictable, so stay flexible if plans change. If bad weather strikes or your 4-year-old isn't up for a long walk, have backup activities like card games or stories ready to go.

10. Capture the Moments

Finally, don't forget to capture the special moments. Take plenty of photos to document the adventure. Encourage your older kids to keep a simple journal of their camping experiences. These mementos will become treasured keepsakes over the years.

Conclusion

Camping with kids can be a rewarding experience that creates lasting family memories. By involving them in the planning, catering to their comfort, ensuring safety, and providing a mix of engaging activities, you'll set the stage for an unforgettable outdoor adventure. Embrace the challenges and the joys of camping with children of different ages, and watch as your family grows closer through the shared experience of nature and exploration.
